Matanga Hill, Hampi
A rocky hill, also called Rishyamuka Parvata, climbed at dawn for wide views over Hampi's ruins and the Tungabhadra.
Overview
Matanga Hill is the usual sunrise viewpoint in Hampi. This guide covers what it is, the climb and gaps in the available information.
Matanga Hill, also known as Rishyamuka Parvata, is a rocky hill in the Matanga hill range at Hampi. Wikipedia says it is supposedly a holy place from the Ramayana and that the range acted as a natural boundary and defence for the Vijayanagara capital. Karnataka Tourism lists it among Hampi's key attractions. The summit gives views over Virupaksha Temple, the Tungabhadra and the boulder-strewn ruins.
Photographs on Wikimedia Commons show the sunrise from the top, which is why most people climb at first light. OpenStreetMap places the hill near the Achyutaraya Temple, . We could not find an official source for the path, any fee or timings, so none are given; ASI describes Hampi's monuments as open from sunrise to sunset, and local rules for entering before dawn should be checked. Carry water and a torch if climbing before dawn, wear grip shoes, and avoid midday heat.
