Fort Aguada

Fort Aguada is one of the most visited historic places to visit in North Goa, a 1612 Portuguese fort with a lighthouse over the Mandovi estuary. Here are timings, fees and history.

Fort Aguada crowns the headland at Sinquerim, at the southern end of the Candolim beach belt, overlooking the point where the Mandovi river meets the Arabian Sea. Goa Tourism records that construction began in 1609 and was completed in 1612, after Dutch attacks in 1604 and 1606 showed that the existing defences were inadequate, and that the fort never fell to an enemy.

The name comes from a freshwater spring inside the fort that supplied passing ships: 'agua' is Portuguese for water, and 'Aguada' means a watering place. The upper fort holds a large cistern and an old lighthouse, and the ramparts give wide views over Sinquerim, Candolim and the Mandovi estuary; the lower fort by the water later housed a jail, which is not open to the public.

The fort is on the Aguada–Siolim road and can be reached by a 4 km motorable road from Sinquerim beach or a steeper 2 km footpath. Goa Tourism lists it as open daily from 09:30 to 18:00. Entry to the fort grounds is reported to be free, while a small fee is charged to climb the lighthouse; published rates differ between sources and could not be confirmed officially. There is little shade on the ramparts, so go early or in late afternoon and carry water.
