Calangute Beach is among the most visited Goa attractions, a long, lively stretch of sand 15 km from Panaji. Here is what to expect, from water sports to swimming safety.

Calangute is the best-known beach in Goa and, according to Goa Tourism, the most popular, with crowds in both peak and off-season. It sits about 15 km from Panaji in Bardez taluka, North Goa, and forms part of a roughly 7 km sandy stretch that continues north to Baga and south towards Candolim.

The beach front is lined with shacks, hotels and guesthouses, and the village behind it has banks, foreign-exchange counters, medical facilities and shops selling handicrafts from Kashmir, Tibet and Rajasthan as well as local goods. Parasailing, jet-skis and other water sports are offered by private operators on the sand.

Goa Tourism warns that the sea here has a sudden drop and rising waves, so it is better suited to experienced swimmers; lifeguards mark supervised swim zones with flags, and 'No Swim Zone' boards stand along risky stretches. The state tourism corporation runs its Calangute Residency on the beach. There is no ticket to enter the beach.

Expect heavy traffic and scarce parking in the evenings and during the Christmas–New Year period; water-sport and parking charges are set by private operators and vary.
