Jakhu Temple crowns Shimla's highest hill and is one of the town's most visited attractions. Walk up from the Ridge or take the ropeway to see the 108-ft Hanuman statue.
Jakhu Temple stands on Jakhu Hill, the highest point of Shimla, about 2.5 km east of The Ridge. Wikipedia gives its height as 2,455 m, and Himachal Tourism as 2,445 m. The temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and the District Administration describes it as the most ancient Hanuman temple in the area. Next to it stands a 108-foot saffron statue of Hanuman, unveiled on 4 November 2010, which is visible from much of the town. There are three main ways up.
The walk from the Ridge is about 2 km uphill and steep, and takes roughly 30–45 minutes. The Jakhu Ropeway, a gondola opened in 2017 by Jagson International, runs from near the town centre. Taxis also go close to the top, and ponies are available. The hill is home to many monkeys, which are known to snatch food, glasses, phones and bags, so keep belongings secured. Views from the top take in Shimla town and, in clear weather, distant ranges.
The temple is a focus of Dussehra celebrations. It is open daily and there is no entry fee.
