Christ Church, Shimla

Christ Church is the landmark of the Ridge and one of Shimla's best-known sights. The neo-Gothic church dates to 1857 and still holds services in Hindi and English.

Christ Church is the most recognisable building on The Ridge, and its tower can be seen from many parts of Shimla. It was built in the neo-Gothic style for the mainly Anglican British community of what was then Simla. Wikipedia dates the church to 1857, while its article on the Ridge gives 1844, which is usually read as the year work began. It is described as the second-oldest church in North India after St John's Church in Meerut.

Services are still held, in both Hindi and English. The church has stained-glass windows and a quiet, plain interior that contrasts with the busy square outside. Along with the neighbouring State Library, it is a key part of the colonial streetscape that Himachal Tourism picks out as Shimla's architectural heritage. It is lit up at night and is a common photo stop. Visitors are expected to keep quiet inside, and photography inside is generally discouraged.

Opening hours for visitors are not published by an official source. Travel sites report that the church is open to visitors Monday to Saturday in the late morning and afternoon, with Sunday mornings set aside for services.
