Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) was founded by citizens of Bombay to mark the 1905 visit of the Prince of Wales, the future George V, who laid its foundation stone in November that year. George Wittet, who later designed the Gateway of India, won the design competition, and the building combines Indo-Saracenic forms with Mughal, Maratha and Jain elements under a large dome, set in a garden of palms and flower beds.

It was known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India until 1998. The collection of about 50,000 objects is organised into art, archaeology and natural history. Highlights include Indus Valley artefacts, sculpture from the Gupta, Maurya, Chalukya and Rashtrakuta periods, Mughal, Rajasthani, Pahari and Deccani miniature paintings, the art collections of Sir Ratan Tata and Sir Dorab Tata, textiles, ivories, arms and armour, and a maritime heritage gallery.

Tickets are sold at the desk or online, with an audio guide option. Large bags, backpacks, umbrellas, selfie sticks and tripods must be left at the baggage counter, and a separate pass is needed for cameras. Some galleries may be closed for work. The museum is in the Kala Ghoda area, a short walk from the Gateway of India and the Jehangir Art Gallery. Plan at least two to three hours.
