Hanuman Tok

Hanuman Tok is a hilltop temple and one of the best Kangchenjunga viewpoints among Gangtok attractions. Maintained by the Indian Army, it sits about 11 km above the town.

Hanuman Tok is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Hanuman, set on a hilltop at about 2,194 m (7,200 ft) in the upper reaches of Gangtok, roughly 11 km from the town centre. Local legend holds that Hanuman rested here while carrying the Sanjeevani mountain to save Lakshmana in the Ramayana. The temple was built in the early 1950s and later came under the Indian Army, which maintains the complex today; this is one reason the grounds are notably clean and well kept.

The temple itself is small and reached by a flight of steps lined with bells and marigold decorations. The real draw for many visitors is the view: on clear mornings the whole Kangchenjunga range spreads across the horizon, and the slopes of Gangtok fall away below. Hanuman Tok is often combined with Ganesh Tok, Tashi View Point and the Himalayan Zoological Park on a local sightseeing loop.

There is no ticketed entry according to travel sources; donations are accepted. Opening times are reported inconsistently (from as early as 5 AM to 7 PM, or 7 AM to 5 PM), so plan to arrive in the morning, which is also the best time for mountain views before clouds build up. Because this is an army-maintained site, follow any instructions from staff and respect photography restrictions if posted.
