Observatory Hill and Mahakal Temple, Darjeeling
A hilltop at Chowrasta with a Mahakal (Shiva) shrine and cave, shared by Hindu and Buddhist worshippers, and Kanchenjunga views.
Overview
Observatory Hill is the short climb above Chowrasta to the Mahakal temple and the town's most central viewpoint. Visitors should watch for monkeys.
Observatory Hill rises just above Chowrasta, the main town square of Darjeeling, at about 2,134 metres. The Mahakal temple on top is dedicated to a form of Shiva and includes a sacred cave that draws many worshippers. According to Wikipedia, the site once held the Buddhist Bhutia Busty monastery, which remains sacred to the Bhutia people, and the name Darjeeling may derive from the Sanskrit 'Durjay Ling', meaning the Shiva of invincible prowess who rules the Himalayas.
Today Hindu and Buddhist visitors worship here side by side, and the slope is hung with prayer flags and bells. From the hilltop on a clear day you can see Kanchenjunga and twelve other peaks above 20,000 feet; the view is best in October and November. The hill is also famous for its monkeys, which snatch food, so keep snacks out of sight. Roads from Chowrasta, including Nehru Road and Bhanubhakta Sarani, meet near the base.
Darjeeling-Tourism.com says there is no charge to visit and the site is open from sunrise to sunset, but no official source lists timings. Climb on foot from the Mall; the path is steep but short, and the temple is a natural first stop in the town.
