Promenade Beach
A 1.2 km seafront promenade of rocks and a walkway along Goubert Avenue, running from the War Memorial to Dupleix Park.
Overview
Promenade Beach is Puducherry's seafront walk along Goubert Avenue. It is a rocky promenade rather than a swimming beach, close to the French Quarter.
Promenade Beach, also called Rock Beach (French: Plage de la Promenade), is the public seafront of Puducherry on the Bay of Bengal. Wikipedia describes it as a 1.2 km stretch along Goubert Avenue, starting at the War Memorial and ending at Dupleix Park. Rather than a sandy beach for swimming, it is a rocky seawall with a paved walkway on the town side, which is why most people come to walk, sit on the rocks and watch the sea.
Landmarks along the way include the French War Memorial, a Mahatma Gandhi statue, the Chief Secretariat and the Old Lighthouse that stands behind the promenade. The stretch sits at the edge of the old French Quarter, so it is easy to combine with the Manakula Vinayagar Temple (about a 10-minute walk, per Wikipedia), the Pondicherry Museum and the cafes of White Town. Early morning and evening are the usual times to visit, when it is cooler and the walkway is busiest.
